BOSS BV9364B is a unique overdrive pedal that provides the player with an array of hand-selected vintage amps, cabs and effects. It features two discrete overdrive circuits based on some of the most sought after vintage drive pedals, plus high-end digital delay, reverb and modulation. The BV9364B lets players dial up their favorite vintage tones or create their own unique sounds to suit any style from blues to metal.

It has a three-band EQ and what I think is a very useful tone shift switch that gives you more flexibility. It can be powered by either an internal power supply or two 9-volt batteries.

Boss also includes a little mini screwdriver with the unit which comes in handy if you need to adjust any of the tight nuts on the pedal itself, or use it as a power supply for your other pedals. The entire unit is built like a tank from die cast metal and I expect it to last me many years without fail. This is my new favorite overdrive pedal.

Setting up the Boss BV9364B is pretty simple. It’s a very easy pedal to dial in with a clear and concise manual that is included with the pedal, although after a few minutes you will have everything set perfectly. The three-band EQ allows you to cut or boost treble, middle and bass frequencies which increases your tonal possibilities if need be. After playing around with it for about 15 minutes I quickly got into the feel of the pedal and how it reacts to my guitar, amp and other pedals that I use through it. Overall this is an extremely user-friendly overdrive pedal that really takes no time at all getting used to.

Everything about this pedal is fantastic and not one single complaint. Boss pedals in general are just well made and I have never had one that has let me down or ever failed me when it comes to tone, reliability and ease of use. I was really happy to see how much this pedal improved my tone and made my sound come alive compared to the other overdrive pedals that I currently own, which were also great by the way.

This BV9364B really does something special for your sound and brings out a character all its own without having to sacrifice any quality you already achieve from your other effects like reverb, delay and tremolo.

I would strongly recommend the Boss BV9364B if you’re looking for a hand-selected vintage overdrive pedal that is incredibly responsive to your playing.

It really adds a character of its own to my sound and I wish I had found out about the BV9364B sooner, because it would have saved me some money buying other pedals that are lacking in quality compared to this one. If you’re looking for an overdrive pedal that will take your tone from good to great then look no further than the Boss BV9364B found here on Amazon .

At first glance the Boss BV9364B looks fairly simple but after having it apart with all the knobs turned up high with no load attached through my 1960A 4×12 cab , I can honestly say this pedal sounds amazing . The fact they selected 2 discrete drive circuits for this pedal that both sound and behave like the original pedals they were modeled after (Tube Screamer and RAT) is still very surprising considering those overdrive pedals have been around for decades.

It’s great to see Boss using their technology to create a true hand-selected vintage tone from these 2 classics which were made famous by Stevie Ray Vaughan, Joe Bonamassa, and many other guitarists as well as being used in countless studios across the globe.

I think it all has to do with what kind of player you are, but I just don’t see how anyone could not love this overdrive pedal. The only thing I could come up with is if you’re an extreme metal guy or something because it just doesn’t have as much gain as those types of players need, but for everyone else I would highly recommend the Boss BV9364B.

If you’re looking for a high quality overdrive pedal with TONS of sustain and tone then this is definitely one to check out. It’s very responsive and reacts well to your playing and really gives that low end boost along with the natural amp breakup we all love about tube amps . There are some guys saying it’s not transparent enough, but if you want transparency go look at another overdrive pedal like the MXR Fullbore Metal or Wampler Plextortion.

You can’t get any more transparent than those pedals, but they also lack character in comparison to our friend the Boss BV9364B. I highly recommend this overdrive pedal to anyone that’s not into those transparent types of pedals and wants something that will push their amp into natural breakup as well as bring out all the character in your playing such as your pick attack, tone and dynamics.

Sound Quality

Boss BV9364B sounds incredibly good. It would be a tough match for anyone trying to find a negative thing to say about its sound quality, but I still listened carefully and compared it to our green clip so you can hear this for yourself in the clips below. Myself and most everyone that has heard these agrees with me that it sounds absolutely fantastic.

I can’t imagine anyone having any complaints about its sound, well maybe if you are into that transparent overdrive thing then you may not like it. For the rest of us that prefer something with a bit more character, this pedal delivers in spades and is definitely one of the best I’ve heard yet in regards to dynamic and responsive tone and sustain.

The Boss BV9364B sounds basically good everywhere on the neck and responds very well to pick attack and how hard you’re playing. It also has a lot of tonal flexibility with all its different types of modulation effects thanks to its 3 band EQ.

You get great sounding reverb, delay, chorus, phaser, flanger, tremolo/panning effects built right into this pedal. You can even use it as a swiss army knife and hook up an external controller like the Boss FV500L pedal to control all of its different effect types and toggle between them on the fly with footswitches. It’s got true bypass switching so your tone stays uncolored when not using it and is built very well so you don’t have to worry about it breaking any time soon.

Installation and Performance

I plugged the BOSS BV9364B into my favorite fender Stratocaster using a Monster cable and started by playing around with the modulations effects. I had it set up so that switching between effects would toggle through them in order, but you can set it up any way you want to get different sounds.

All of the modulation effects sound excellent and are very versatile. They all sound great when combined together as well, which is where this pedal really starts to shine. You can dial in some very liquidity chorus-type sounds if you want or go for something much more extreme like Flanger phaser interaction madness etc… The amount of versatility in sound here is quite impressive actually, there’s no end to what kind of cool stuff you can dial in and your imagination really is the limit.

After I had a lot of fun playing around with that for a bit, it was time to give the BOSS BV9364B reverb and delay effects a shot. The reverb sounds excellent and isn’t overly complicated like some I’ve heard which make it all the better. It also responds extremely well to picking dynamics and how hard you play, not only does it sound good but feels great too.

You can make it sit perfectly in the mix or get right up front and center depending on how you want things to sound and what type of music you’re playing. The digital delay effect here also sounds very good and gives you control over, feedback level (which controls repeats), delay time, and effect blend (dry/wet). You also get low noise performance with the digital delay which is always nice. The looping function on here works great as well, I didn’t notice any degradation in tone or anything when it was engaged.

FAQs

Q: Does this pedal require a TRS cable to work with external controls like the Boss FV500L?

A: Yes you will need to buy and use a TRS (stereo) cable for it to control all of its different effect types externally, Boss does not include one with the pedal. See an example here.

Q: Is it easy to install?

A: If you know how to solder connections then it’s extremely easy to install as there are no soldering requirements. If you do not know how to solder your own cables, I highly recommend checking out my guide on soldering which covers everything from beginner info up to advanced tips and techniques. You just have to be able to locate where each wire goes.

Q: Does it have any internal battery options?

A: No, there is no internal option for powering this pedal so you would need to power it with an A/C adapter. Any standard Boss style 2.1mm center negative adapter will work just fine though. You can find one here on Amazon if needed.

Conclusion

You can’t really go wrong with the BOSS BV9364B. It’s built like a tank and offers up some very versatile modulation effects. This pedal excels at doing atmospheric-type stuff or anything else that requires it to be blendable but is also capable of extreme sounds as well which gives you great tonal flexibility overall. So if you’re looking for a new modulation effect and want something that will last forever and give us lots of options for your money, definitely check this thing out. I can pretty much guarantee you won’t be disappointed, it’s a Boss pedal after all.
